Internal Scholarships

IBBME International Scholars Program

The IBBME International Scholars Program will award up to two $10K fellowships per year to eligible incoming direct-entry doctoral students.  Applicants to this program should submit a full CV, copies of published work as well as a support letter from their proposed supervisor. Applications will be judged based on academic and research excellence.  These awards are renewable for up to 4 years based on demonstrated progress in the doctoral program, as evidenced by an annual report due to the graduate office.  This report will comprise a progress report on research activities, copies of published work, and a support letter from the supervisor and will be reviewed by the IBBME Graduate Awards Committee.  The scholarship can only be held by full-time, international students.  Decisions of the awards committee are final and binding.

Ontario Graduate Scholarships in Science & Technology (OGSST)

The Ontario Graduate Scholarships in Science and Technology (OGSST) Program is designed to encourage excellence in science and technology graduate studies. The program is supported through funds provided by the Province of Ontario and raised by the University of Toronto. Applicants must be either Canadian citizens or permanent residents who are enrolled in the MASc or PhD degree program at the Institute. These scholarships are awarded to students on the basis of high scholastic achievement, including evidence of advance research skills

Connaught Scholarship

The Connaught Scholarship is a prestigious entrance award intended to attract excellent students. These scholarships are primarily awarded to International students. There is no application process. Students are automatically considered when applying for admission to the Institute.

Barbara and Frank Milligan Graduate Fellowships

This fellowship was established in 2006 with a generous gift from Barbara and Frank Milligan and matching funds from the University of Toronto. The income from the fund is used to award 1st year MASc and PhD students directly enrolled in the Biomedical Engineering program at Institute and in the Collaborative Program in Biomedical Engineering whose home department is Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE). There is no application process. Students are automatically considered on the basis of academic merit. The selection of the collaborative program awardees will be based on joint recommendation of the graduate coordinators of IBBME and MIE.

Sally and Paul Wang Distinguished Graduate Scholarship

This award was created in recognition of a generous donation by Sally and Paul Wang. Professor Paul Wang was a faculty member at the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering for thirty-five years, and a member of the Banting and Best Diabetes Centre for sixteen years. During his tenure at the University, he developed a sustained release insulin implant in his laboratory. Professor Wang founded LinShin Canada, Inc. in 1992, from which the Fund is derived. LinShin Canada, Inc. was created to facilitate technology transfer of the sustained release insulin implant, which is used internationally in diabetes research.

Two scholarships are awarded annually to full-time graduate students who have demonstrated financial need, and have established outstanding academic and extra-curricular leadership.

Next application deadline is May 14, 2012.

DOCTORAL COMPLETION AWARD (DCA)

The aim of the Doctoral Completion Award (DCA) is to help ensure that PhD students who are no longer receiving the normal funding from their graduate unit can complete their degree program within time limit for degree. Students may receive a DCA only once during their program. The award is competitive.and is only intended for students who have been given approval by their committee to begin writing their thesis.

Please note that students who have experienced a delay in their program due to unfortunate personal circumstances should refer to the Emergency Grant program.

Award Value

The DCA provides, approximately, tuition for one term at the domestic rate, though International students are eligible to apply. The award is posted to the student’s account and applied to any outstanding balance

Eligibility

Applicants for the DCA must:

  • Be full‐time PhD students who are within the time-limit of their degree.
  • Be in good academic standing including having achieved candidacy and having satisfactory supervisory committee reports.
  • Have been approved in their last committee meeting to begin writing their thesis
  • Have not received a previous DCA.
  • No longer be receiving the normal funding package* for PhD students in the year for which they are applying.
  • Not concurrently holding a paid continuing professional position

Applications must include:

  • A completed DCA Application form.
  • Copy of their last committee meeting report highlighting approval to begin writing thesis
  • A copy of ROSI transcripts

*Note that the “normal funding package” is dependent on local graduate unit practice: minimal funding packages are described under “Graduate Funding Structures” on the SGS web site at http://www.sgs.utoronto.ca/informationfor/students/money/funding.htm , but some units provide funding packages for longer than the minimum time. Applicants should only apply for a DCA if they will be beyond the time the unit normally provides funding.
